Playing Away: Paint the town red and white with Preston, Crewe and Port Vale

Jack Beresford has been recruited for a special mission: picking three potential away winners from the midweek Johnstone’s Paint Trophy action.

Playing Away: Paint the town red and white with Preston, Crewe and Port Vale

Far from being a break from the trials and tribulations of betting on League One and League Two, this evening’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy fixtures are welcomed with open arms by this particular punter.

After all, with England facing off against San Marino in the kind of international that makes watching paint dry seem preferable (sorry, couldn’t resist), the JPT is the big football event this week as far as I’m concerned.

And having frisked the fixtures in search of away victories, it seems clear that Preston North End, Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale are the best three teams to back for wins on the road, whether individually or in a treble with just over 21/1.

Read on to find out why the trio look good to triumph and if you are joining bwin.com, feel free to back any of them with your free £20 bet after registering.

Port Vale to beat Walsall @ 21/10

Aside from Martin Allen’s Gillingham, Port Vale are the form team in League Two at present, with just one defeat in their last ten competitive games.

The Vale have been particularly strong on the road, with five consecutive away victories recorded in League Two so far this campaign.

They will surely be relishing a visit to Walsall, having gone six games unbeaten against their hosts.

The Saddlers’ home form has been concerning of late, with defeats in their last two fixtures at Banks’s Stadium against Carlisle and Leyton Orient, and Vale look a decent price to cause an upset.

Preston to beat Morecambe @ 11/10

Things seem to have calmed down a bit at Preston these days following the brief and thoroughly bizarre tenure of Phil ‘Tango Man’ Brown.

Successor Graham Westley (who is capable of the odd madcap moment too, in truth) has seen his team make a steady, if unspectacular, start to this campaign, winning two of their last three games in the league. Away form has been similarly hit and miss, with three wins recorded in their last five games on the road.

Fortunately, in Morecambe, they face a team with real problems at home. The Shrimps have won just one of their last 13 fixtures in all competitions at the Globe Arena, with manager Jim Bentley looking short of inspiration so far this campaign.

That run could well continue against Preston, with the northerners winning the previous two meetings between the clubs and keen to complete a hat-trick of victories.

Crewe to beat Shrewsbury @ 23/10

League One newcomers Crewe Alexandra may have experienced something close to a baptism of fire in their first few months in League One, but the Alex look to have weathered that storm now and are ready to roll.

A morale-boosting 2-1 win over Hartlepool United helped things along, but Crewe are in pretty solid form at the moment, having lost just twice in their last seven games.

An encounter with an out-of-sorts Shrewsbury could be just the ticket, with the Shrews without a win in four games and without a goal in any of their last three.

Home form has been an issue, with Shrewsbury claiming just a single win from four games at New Meadow, and Crewe could well cash in on any jitters by grabbing a win at a big-looking 23/10.
