Copa America title looks to be Uruguay’s to lose

The 2011 Copa America reaches its climax this weekend, with Uruguay the favourites to lift the trophy for the first time since 1995 in bwin’s football betting market.

La Celeste are up against Paraguay on Sunday and are heavy 83/100 favourites to win the game against this year’s surprise packages.

As 18/1 shots before the start of the competition, Paraguay were not expected to have made it all the way to the final.

That they are still in with a shot of winning the tournament without actually winning a game makes their progress all-the-more remarkable.

Having drawn all three of their group games, Paraguay’s two successes in the knock-out round have come by way of penalty shoot-out after 0-0 draws, first against Brazil and then against Venezuela in the semi-final.

With this in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that la Albirroja are 7/2 outsiders to win the match and priced at 39/20 to lift the trophy.

However, given that Paraguay have kept clean sheets in each of their last two games – albeit without scoring themselves – and in three games out of five in the tournament as a whole, they are likely to push Uruguay close.

Oscar Tabarez’s men have hardly been scoring freely themselves, with their 2-0 win over Peru at the semi-final stage the first time they have struck more than once in a 2011 Copa America match.

As such, the best bet could be on Uruguay scraping home by a single goal to nil, a scoreline available at market-leading odds of 5/1 with bwin.

A £25 free bet on Uruguay to beet Paraguay 1-0 in the Copa America final, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £150.

That said, it is also worth noting that, should Paraguay’s strikers find their form in front of goal, they are likely to strike in the second half.

Of the five goals registered by Paraguay in the tournament so far, four have been scored after the interval.

Those convinced la Albirroja will breach the competition’s best defence would therefore be best off betting on Paraguay to score a single goal in the second half at odds of 21/10.
