Mixed bag of results for English sides in Tuesday’s friendlies
Premier League clubs in action all over the world yesterday had contrasting fortunes as preparations for the big kick off continue.
Premier League clubs had mixed fortunes in their Tuesday friendlies as Arsenal, Norwich City and Aston Villa recorded wins, Tottenham Hotspur drew with LA Galaxy and Stoke City, Swansea City and Reading all slumped to defeats.
As the start of the Premier League season edges ever nearer and many sides are beginning to get their full quota of players back after Euro 2012, clubs are beginning to crank up their pre-seasons schedules and it is interesting to note how each manager copes with the workload.
Tony Pulis, for example, made no bones about the fact he didn’t care about how Stoke got on against Columbus Crew, forcing the players to train twice before the game even kicked off in search of extra fitness. Columbus duly won 2-1, which I tipped up at a great price of 21/10.
Tottenham continue their American tour with a match against Liverpool on Saturday while Arsenal take on Premier League champions Man City on Friday.
The north London sides had decent workouts, Arsenal starting their Asian tour by coming from behind to beat a Malaysian XI 2-1 (again, I tipped a winner with the 23/10 on Malaysia to win with a two goal head start) while Spurs ended all square against an LA Galaxy side fighting fit in the middle of their domestic season. Aston Villa also drew, 2-2 with Portland Timbers, eventually winning 3-2 on penalties in the final match of their American tour.
There was less joy for Swansea, who lost 2-1 against MLS side Colorado Rapids as Michael Laudrup took charge of the Swans for the first time, and Reading, who lost 2-0 to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in Portugal.
All of those sides are in action again later in the week, with a couple of juicy looking clashes to look forward to. Tottenham continue their American tour with a match against Liverpool on Saturday (bwin price up Spurs as 3/2 favourites, with the Reds at 17/10 and the draw at 11/5) while Arsenal take on Premier League champions Manchester City on Friday. Roberto Mancini’s men are the 11/10 favourites to beat their London rivals, with the Gunners at 21/10 and the draw priced up at 11/5.
