Why Madrid’s trip to Sevilla should serve up goals

The champions travel to Andalusia this weekend and a high-scoring encounter looks to be on the cards.

Why Madrid’s trip to Sevilla should serve up goals

A trip to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan was once a venture into a fiery footballing cauldron; the vast crumbling amphitheatre situated in Europe’s hottest city, housing some of the continent’s most passionate fans and home to one of its most exciting teams.

But things have changed both on and off the pitch, and while the stadium remains ramshackle, the economic situation of the country coupled with the club’s recent slide down the league means it rarely comes close to being full.

Though it is not the biggest price in the world, over 2.5 at 53/100 should see some decent profit on any investment, with the bet paying out in five of Sevilla’s last six home matches, and in seven of Madrid’s last eight away games.

Sevilla, then, are not the force they once were finishing last season in 9th position, but they have started the season brightly unbeaten in their three matches so far. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have had a well documented sluggish start to the defence of their league title drawing their opening game, losing their second match, before gaining their first win against Granada. A home win can be backed at 9/2 while the draw is offered at 16/5 and a victory for Madrid available at 53/100.

The statistics all point to an away win, with Los Blancos having won the last seven matches against Sevilla including two consecutive 6-2 victories in each of their last two visits to the Sanchez Pizjuan. Yet with the vast majority of their squad involved in at least two matches over the international break and a colossus of a Champions League group stage opener against Manchester City looming on the horizon, Jose Mourinho may well make some changes to his starting line up.

Though they may well end up winning the game, that makes backing Madrid perhaps more risky than usual, so a venture into the goals market might be more profitable. Though it is not the biggest price in the world, over 2.5 at 53/100 should see some decent profit on any investment, with the bet paying out in five of Sevilla’s last six home matches, and in seven of Madrid’s last eight away games.

The goalscorer market is also of interest, with Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain in stunning form having netted six goals in seven matches for club and country. He is priced at 3/1 to open the scoring, yet after two matches in South America for Argentina, he may well be rested. Instead backing Alvaro Negredo to score at any time for Sevilla looks more tempting at 8/5. The former Madrid forward has scored three times in his last matches against his old club as has started the season brightly with two goals in three games.
