Playing Away: Gillingham, Oldham and Bristol Rovers offer value
Jack Beresford plunges to the darkest depths of League One and League Two and wades through the rubbish to bring you three potential away winners.
The deadly trio of Gillingham, Oldham Athletic and Bristol Rovers may raise a few eyebrows, but they look well placed for wins against Carlisle United, Torquay United and AFC Wimbledon respectively in Leagues One and Two this evening.
While I’ve always been a die-hard lower-league football fan, I sometimes find my love of films invading my thinking when it comes to football betting tips. And though previous weeks have seen me spout on about the likes of the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Looper, this week is all about trilogies.
This week’s trio of potential away winners carries all the traits of any good film trilogy. You have Gillingham – the eye-catching original; Oldham – the solid follow up; and Bristol Rovers – the iffy inclusion that can still offer a few surprises.
Now that that painful analogy is out of the way, let’s get down to the numbers. Available at odds of just over 16/1, this tempting treble offers returns of £325.38 for anyone using bwin’s free £20 bet for registering.
| Confederation Cup - Group B | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | 0-1 | Uruguay | £135.00 | (23/4) |
| Nigeria | 1-1 | Uruguay | £140.00 | (6/1) |
| Nigeria | 0-2 | Uruguay | £155.00 | (27/4) |
| Nigeria win | £94.00 | (37/10) | ||
| Draw | £74.00 | (27/10) | ||
| Uruguay win | £34.00 | (7/10) | ||
And while landing all three could be viewed as unlikely, as ever with our ‘Playing Away’ columns, we are equally happy to point you in the direction of a single bet on any or all of them.
Gillingham to beat Torquay United @ 6/5
It’s something of an open secret at bwinbetting.com HQ that I’ve developed something of a man crush on Gills boss Martin Allen. Part of this love for all things Mad Dog has stemmed from Gillingham’s ongoing ability to deliver the goods when I back them in League Two.
The Gills continue to lead the standings and are on a run of four games unbeaten. Recent outings have seen the Kent club banging the goals in too, with eight plundered in their last two matches alone.
And while Gillingham’s home form has been solid, their success on the road has been even greater, with five wins and one draw from their six away games this season.
The Gills will be confident of continuing that run against Torquay United, having beaten the south-coast club home and away last term – including a famous 5-2 demolition at Plainmoor.
With the hosts heading into this one on the back of three defeats in their last four, an away win at 6/5 looks mighty tempting.
Oldham Athletic to beat Carlisle United @ 19/10
While the glory days of the Premier League may be far behind them, Oldham have hit a decent bit of form of late and could be dark horses for promotion from League One this term.
The Latics have won three and drawn one of their last four and will relish the opportunity of facing Carlisle United at Brunton Park, having avoided defeat in each of their last three meetings with the hosts.
Carlisle are on a poor run too, having won just one of their last six competitive games. Their league form has been particularly poor, with the Cumbrians winless in three matches.
Oldham beat Carlisle in their last competitive meeting and could be on for another win here at 19/10.
Bristol Rovers to beat AFC Wimbledon @ 31/20
Earlier in the season, if I had told you to back Bristol Rovers for a win, I most likely would have received a torrent of abuse and most likely a few flying fists.
However, as the weeks have progressed, the south-west club have begun to find their feet and move away from the basement of League Two. The last few games have proven particularly positive, with Rovers earning seven points from a possible nine.
And with the Bristolians unbeaten in three on the road, a visit to League Two’s other misfits, AFC Wimbledon, could be perfectly timed.
The arrival of Neal Ardley has failed to have the desired impact for the Dons, who have won just one of their last five matches. Wimbledon have been particularly poor at home and have now gone five games without a win on their own patch.
And with Bristol Rovers beating Wimbledon home and away last season, an away victory looks good here at the decent price of 31/20.
