Playing Away – Notts County, Morecambe and Southend
Jack Beresford explains why his latest travelling trio in League One and League Two all offer chances for a solid return.
With another weekend of League One and League Two action on the cards, Southend United, Morecambe and Notts County could shine with away wins come Saturday in their matches against Cheltenham Town, Aldershot Town and Oldham Athletic respectively.
While the past week may have seen some unseasonably warm weather hit the UK, you will be pleased to know I have spent the majority of my week poring over the various standings and statistics related to League One and Two.
And after many late nights debating the genius of Jim Bentley, the perfection of Paul Sturrock and the…curls…of Keith Curle, I’m ready to unveil my masterpiece.
So, for punters seeking an away-day treble with odds of just over 21/1 after registering with bwin – or simply a viable single on a visiting team – here is why you should put your faith in one or more of Southend, Morecambe and Notts County.

Southend to beat Cheltenham Town @ 2/1
The Shimpers have come on leaps and bounds since their 3-3 draw away at Northampton and head to Cheltenham brimming with confidence after winning three games on the bounce in all competitions.
Southend will have fond memories of their last encounter with the Robins too, as it ended in a resounding 4-0 victory.
The hosts, meanwhile, are hardly in the best of shape, having won just one of their last four in all competitions. Cheltenham’s home form is a similarly sad story, with just one victory to their name from their last four games at Whaddon Road.
Last time out was particularly embarrassing, with the visiting Accrington Stanley picking up a 3-0 away win. A repeat could be on the cards this weekend and Southend, one of the pre-season promotion favourites, look decent at 2/1.
Notts County to beat Oldham @ 27/20
Keith Curle, the silver fox of League One management, has been doing a fantastic job at Notts County so far this season, with the Magpies winning four out of their five games in the division.
The Magpies will head to Oldham in confident mood having gone unbeaten in nine games on the road in a record that stretches to the back end of last season.
Curle’s team are also on a run of three straight wins and could make it four against an Oldham team who are yet to enjoy the sweet taste of victory at home this campaign.
Last time out, the hosts slipped to defeat against Stevenage and with Curle still working his magic while the ever-green Lee Hughes continues to bang in the goals, an away win for Notts County at 27/20 offers a solid punt.
Morecambe to beat Aldershot Town @ 2/1
Poor Dean Holdsworth. At the start of the season, the former Bolton Wanderers and Wimbledon hitman was the toast of the managerial town, with ambitious Crawley making an offer for him to step into the Broadfield Stadium hotseat..
A few weeks on and it’s doubtful whether even Bath City would touch Deano, as the Shots are without a win in four and more importantly, are yet to score a victory at home.
They could be easy pickings for Morecambe, who, while less-than-inspiring at the Globe Arena, have proven quite the force on the road.
The Shrimpers have a 100% away record in League Two this campaign, having claimed classy 3-0 wins over Exeter and Bristol Rovers.
A price of 2/1 to make it three away wins in a row is available here and the signs aren’t looking good for Deano.
