Blades still fancied in title betting despite Rovers’ five-star showing

Sheffield United remain favourites to finish top of the pile at 4/1, but punters will be sitting up and taking notice of Tranmere's impressive drubbing of Crawley Town.

Blades still fancied in title betting despite Rovers’ five-star showing

Sheffield United remain favourites to win League One after a narrow victory over Yeovil Town, while weekend wins for MK Dons, Swindon Town, Notts County and Tranmere Rovers saw their respective prices for the title trimmed.

The Blades have not always been convincing so far this term but they did just enough at Huish Park, Neil Collins scoring the only goal of the game to move them into the play-off places.

United are unchanged at 4/1 in the title betting market and sit six points adrift of leaders Tranmere, whose superb start to the campaign continued with an emphatic 5-2 win away at Crawley Town.

Ronnie Moore’s men have dropped just four points in their eight games and have a goal difference of +17, which could make them a tempting proposition to finish top of the pile at a lengthy-looking 10/1.

Ronnie Moore’s men have dropped just four points in their eight games and have a goal difference of +17, which could make them a tempting proposition to finish top of the pile at a lengthy-looking 10/1.

MK Dons, meanwhile, recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory away at bottom-of-the-table Bury and are now second favourites to win the division at 5/1 – a price which is a market leader at the time of writing.

A Dean Bowditch hat-trick and a goal from former Manchester United star Luke Chadwick helped push the Dons up to fourth place, although they remain six points adrift of the pace being set by Tranmere.

Paolo Di Canio’s Swindon Town also moved into the play off places with a 4-0 win over Bournemouth which saw their title odds shorten slightly from 7/1 to 13/2, while second-placed Notts County were slashed from 10/1 to 8/1 after a Yoann Arquin brace guided them to a 3-0 win over Portsmouth.

That result enabled the Magpies to leapfrog 16/1 title shots Stevenage, who remain unbeaten after eight games but were left frustrated at the weekend as a late Chris Brown equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Gary Smith’s men are a now a 5/1 chance to secure a route up to the Championship by whatever means necessary, while MK Dons and Sheffield United are now joint favourites at 3/2, with Swindon just behind at 2/1, Notts County at 11/4 and Tranmere available at 3/1.

The other big movers in the promotion market were Walsall, who shortened to 16/1 (from 25/1) after continuing their impressive early-season form with a 3-1 win over Preston – a result which saw the Lilywhites drift from 7/2 to 4/1.
