First leg lead enough for Cheltenham to progress
Cheltenham travel to Torquay knowing that they are 90 minutes away from Wembley after securing a 2-0 first leg lead.
Goals from Jermaine McGlashan and Ben Burgess helped Cheltenham Town to a 2-0 lead over Torquay United in the first leg of their League Two play-off semi-final and the Robins will be hopeful that that is a big enough advantage for them to progress to the final ahead of today’s return fixture at Plainmoor.
Torquay need to come out firing for this game to have any chance of pulling off a shock.
The good news for the Gulls is that they are favourites to win the game at evens, with an away win priced at 12/5.
Only six teams in League Two have seen more of their away matches end with over 2.5 goals than Cheltenham, while both sides were in the top ten in terms of goals scored over the course of the season.
However, it is the draw at 23/10 which looks the most favourable – a result which would end Torquay’s season while prolonging Cheltenham’s.
So why is the draw the most likely outcome? Firstly, Torquay haven’t won any of their last six games, drawing half of them. Avoiding defeat therefore looks to be the best they can hope for against a Cheltenham side who come into the game on the back of four wins in their last six.
But with the Robins being the away side, they could find it hard to repeat the win they secured at home in the first leg. This points towards the draw being the best option.
Due to the first leg result, when looking at the odds on advancing to the final, Cheltenham are widely expected to be at Wembley as they are priced at 11/50. Tthe home side are priced at 3/1 to advance to the next round.
Should the second leg end in a draw, then, Cheltenham will have more than justified their status as favourites.
Away from the final result, another good bet looks to be on over 2.5 goals at evens.
Only six teams in League Two have seen more of their away matches end with over 2.5 goals than Cheltenham, while both sides were in the top ten in terms of goals scored over the course of the season.
And with the likes of Rene Howe, Lee Mansell, Daryl Duffy and Kaid Mohamed on display, goals should be on the agenda.
