Aguero 9/1 in golden boot betting after City rekindle champion form

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero scored his second goal of the Premier League season on Saturday and is now 9/1 third favourite for the golden boot, behind only Manchester United hitman Robin van Persie and Chelsea’s Fernando Torres in the betting.

The Argentine made an impact straight after coming on as a substitute in the 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, slotting home a pinpoint cross from Aleksandr Kolarov.
The contrast between Aguero misfiring City striker Mario Balotelli could not be starker. With the Italian still looking for his first goal of the season and earning the disapproval of his manager for a lame showing against the Black Cats, his odds of landing the golden boot have drifted out to 66/1.
City’s best performance of the season so far came at a useful time for anyone with their money riding on Aguero or team-mate Carlos Tevez (also 9/1) for the top goalscorer’s crown.

Second favourite Torres’ claims to the golden boot are also helped by an impressive weekend for Chelsea. The Spaniard’s fourth goal of the season in the 4-1 triumph over Norwich makes him a 13/2 shout and with the Blues’ midfield without doubt now the league’s strongest, there is a feeling that Torres could yet strike richer goalscoring form.
As for some of the longer shots, Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud finally got off the Premier League mark in Arsenal’s 3-1 win at West Ham and is a massive 40/1 to finish the season as top goalscorer.
Giroud’s wayward finishing to date hasn’t helped his claims, but with the Gunners among the most prolific sides in the country, it is a mystery as to why his odds are quite that long.
The Frenchman was joint top goalscorer in Ligue 1 last season, when he helped fire Montpellier to an unlikely title triumph, and he has the physical presence to thrive in the Premier League once he is settled.
Meanwhile, Van Persie remains favourite to retain the golden boot at 11/4, despite drawing a blank in United’s 3-0 victory at Newcastle on Sunday.
