Liverpool might be winless in the league after four games but this will count for nothing when they host Man Utd, says Michael Carrick.

The 31-year-old midfielder thinks the rivalry between the two clubs means the game should be treated as a one-off event.

As such, he suggests not too much should be read into the fact that Liverpool find themselves down in 17th position in the Premier League table having lost two and drawn two of their four league games this season.

Carrick: “Until you go to one of these games or play in one of these games you don’t realise how special they are.”

This is reflected in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, where Liverpool are 17/10 to pick up their first three points of the campaign, the draw is at 23/10 and United are narrow favourites at 3/2.

“What’s gone on in weeks prior to the game doesn’t count for much really, it’s shown in the past that whoever’s tended to be the better team hasn’t always come out on top,” Carrick commented.

“It’s about playing well on the day – whoever does that will get the right result.”

In bwin’s first Manchester United player forecast of the season, Carrick also talks about the unique atmosphere of a Liverpool v Manchester United match.

“It’s a huge game. The history between the two clubs is immense. It’s two clubs with great traditions and the atmosphere is incredible both home and away,” he commented.

“Until you go to one of these games or play in one of these games you don’t realise how special they are.”

Carrick goes into the Anfield showdown having scored the winner for the Red Devils in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League.

The England international can be backed at 8/1 to score on Sunday and is priced at 28/1 to break the deadlock.
