City remain Premier League favourites as QPR cut for drop

It was a good weekend for the teams at the top of the Premier League outright betting with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all winning, while at the other end Reading, Norwich, Southampton, Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers head the relegation market.

The champions remain the favourites to retain the Premier League title despite being pushed out ever so slightly from 3/2 to 8/5 after the weekend’s action. Roberto Mancini’s side looked more like their old selves during the 3-0 win over Sunderland at the Etihad, keeping their first clean sheet of the season.

Arch-rivals United remain at 2/1 after an impressive 3-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Sports Direct Arena. The fine performance by Sir Alex Ferguson’s side saw them remain level on points with the champions.

Both clubs still trail leaders Chelsea, though, who are four points clear at the top after a comprehensive 4-1 win over Norwich City at Stamford Bridge. Despite going behind, Roberto Di Matteo’s side ran out easy winners to stay unbeaten having taken 19 points from seven games and have now been trimmed to 57/20 from 3/1 for the title.

Arsenal kept in touch with the teams at the top by beating West Ham United 3-1 at Upton Park, a comeback win that has seen the Gunners’ title odds go from 11/1 to 10/1. North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have also been cut, from 50/1 to 40/1, after a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane gave Andre Villas-Boas a fourth consecutive league victory.

At the other end of the table, that defeat for Norwich leaves the Canaries as favourites for relegation. Chris Hughton’s side, who remain without a win, are now 13/20 (from 3/4) for the drop.

Reading moved slightly 3/4 from 7/10 after a 2-2 draw at Swansea also left them winless, while Southampton are now even money for an immediate return to the Championship, out from 4/5, after a 2-2 draw at home to Fulham.

Wigan also drew 2-2, against Everton at the DW Stadium, and have lengthened slightly from 8/5 to 33/20 for the drop. But the big movers in the relegation market are Queens Park Rangers, who remain rooted to the foot of the table on just two points after a 3-2 defeat against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

Mark Hughes’ team are now just 9/4 to finish in the bottom three, cut from 7/2 before the weekend, despite a huge spending spree in the summer.
