Will Gylfi’s goals get Spurs going?

The first signing of the Andre Villas-Boas era looks worth a punt at 7/5 to net nine or more league goals for his new club next term.

Will Gylfi’s goals get Spurs going?

Tottenham have beaten off competition from Liverpool and Swansea City to complete the signing of midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Iceland star has been in demand all summer after he enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Swans following his arrival on loan from German side Hoffenheim in January.

Sigurdsson was initially on the verge of a permanent £6.8 million switch to the Liberty Stadium, but that move was scuppered when boss Brendan Rodgers moved to Liverpool.

And while the Reds were thought to be pushing hard to bring the former Reading playmaker to Anfield, Spurs stole a march on their top-four rivals to secure his signature.

With better players around him at White Hart Lane and the ever-present threat he poses from direct free-kicks, it would be no surprise at all to see the 22-year-old get into double figures comfortably.

With Luka Modric looking increasingly likely to depart this summer, Spurs – who this week appointed Andre Villas-Boas as Harry Redknapp’s successor – need to reinforce their midfield options.

And following the confirmation of the deal, bwin have priced up a market on how many Premier League goals Sigurdsson will plunder for his new employers during the 2012/13 campaign (see it here).

We make him 1/2 to manage fewer than nine and 7/5 to net nine or more, with the latter price looking particularly inviting considering he managed seven for the Swans in just half a season.

Punters registering with bwin can claim a free £20 bet and placing this on Sigurdsson to notch at least nine league goals for Spurs next term would return £48 if successful.

But whether that would be enough to see the north Londoners reach the promised land of the top four – they are currently priced at 2/1 to achieve that goal – remains to be seen.

Recommended bet: Sigurdsson to score nine or more league goals in 2012/13
