Rooney’s golden boot odds not so loony after double
The Manchester United front man has been slashed to 16/1 in the top scorer market after his dominant display against Stoke City, with team-mate Robin van Persie remaining favourite.
Wayne Rooney has been cut to 16/1 from 25/1 in the Premier League golden boot betting market after scoring twice in Manchester United’s victory over Stoke City on Saturday.
After a lacklustre performance for England in midweek, it seemed almost inevitable that the former Everton man would fire on all cylinders for his club at the weekend.
In grabbing his first goals of the season (plus another he will want to forget that was scored in his own net), Rooney has belatedly announced his arrival in the top scorer race.
Odds of 16/1 remain a bargain for a player who has been among the top ten scorers for five of the past seven seasons and was only three goals shy of Robin van Persie in last year’s battle for the golden boot.

Punters registering with bwin can claim a free £20 bet and placing this on Rooney to finish the season as Premier League top scorer would return an impressive £340 if successful.
The value of the price is underlined by the fact that Rooney was as short as 8/1 at the start of the season and still has 30 matches to bridge the four-goal gap to the trio of current top goalscorers.
Van Persie is one of those pacesetters after also netting for United in the victory over the Potters on Saturday and the flying Dutchman is now a 9/4 favourite to retain the golden boot.
Swansea’s goal-hungry midfielder Michu was cut to 33/1 from 40 /1 after also grabbing his sixth goal of the campaign in the Welsh outfit’s 2-1 triumph over Wigan Athletic at the Liberty Stadium.
Newcastle’s Demba Ba, the other player with six goals, stays at 16/1 despite inadvertently netting for local rivals Sunderland, while Manchester City hitman Edin Dzeko has seen his odds cut to 33/1 from 50/1 after bagging a match-winning late brace against West Brom.
Dzeko certainly looks a superb long shot for canny punters as his five goals leave him just one short of the top scorers thus far and he boasts the best goals-per-minute ratio of the leading contenders with a goal every 55.6 minutes this season.
Should the Bosnian start to feature more often in Roberto Mancini’s starting line-ups – as many Manchester City supporters are demanding – his clinical finishing is likely to send those odds down further in the near future.
