Why the Toffees look sweet to beat the Toon
Everton and Newcastle have had long enough to dwell on dropped points prior to the international break but which one of them will return to winning ways?
Ahead of the start of a new Champions League campaign, both of these clubs will again be harbouring aspirations of a top-four assault. Newcastle’s fifth place finish last term showed what can be achieved with hard work, organisation and effective frontmen to grab goals and it will be interesting to see who has the upper hand between the two sides on Monday night.

Everton’s fall at the Hawthorns last time out was surprising due to the nature of it rather than just the result, so David Moyes will be expecting much more vitality backed by a partisan Goodison crowd.
Similarly, Toon boss Alan Pardew can’t have been impressed with a 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa a fortnight ago and prior to that his men were strangely timid in a defeat to pacesetters Chelsea.

Football is a game of fine margins but tonight’s outcome could hinge on basic principles of whoever puts the most hard yards in and this might not be a match for the purists or the feint-hearted.
Although the visitors finished two places and nine points higher than their hosts last season it is difficult to separate these sides yet bwin’s 3Way football betting market leans highly towards the Toffee’s as favourites for this game.
Everton are odds-on 13/20 for the win with the draw at 27/10 and Newcastle way out at 17/4 to pick up the points.
At the forefront of the oddsmaker’s minds would probably have been the way Moyes boys dismantled Manchester United in these parts on the opening weekend, as well as five home wins in the last seven Newcastle visits.
All in all Everton have won eight of their last nine games at Goodison having conceded just two goals to boot so for them to win to nil at 8/5 may be worth a look if like me you’re going for a Toffee’s win.
As well as Pardew’s side did last year few will deny they did anything but overachieve whereas Everton should be looking to overtake them. A Monday night cauldron at Goodison will appeal to few teams and with Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Simpson missing from the Barcodes defence I think Nikita Jelavic and co could make hay.
Goals could be at a premium so if you’re going for the Everton win, do it with under 3.5 goals at 13/10 or the half-time draw followed by Everton at 7/2 is great value.

If you don’t share my optimism for the blue half of Merseyside to temporarily move up to third, the draw isn’t a bad offering at 27/10 and following the lack of goals theme 1-1 at 6/1 represents best value.
The strikes from these two usually come from a few sources so it’s not surprising to see Jelavic shortest price to score in the game at 7/5 with Maraouane Fellaini, Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Kevin Mirallas following at 2/1. But if you want a dabble on the goalscoring market Steven Pienaar or Leon Osman at 12s and 14/1 respectively to get the first goal of the game is where I would go.
Recommended bet: Everton to win and under 3.5 goals @ 13/10
Outside punt: Everton/Everton half-time/full-time @ 7/2
