The Spaniard has impressed in a Chelsea revival but value in the top goalscoring betting is still with Manchester United and Van Persie at 6/1.

Torres new top scorer favourite but is RVP the better bet?

Two goals in three matches has seen Fernando Torres emerge as 11/2 outright favourite with bwin in the Premier League top goalscorer betting market. But while the Spaniard has returned to form this season, with the former Liverpool man the linchpin of Chelsea’s new attacking approach, it could yet be worth looking elsewhere to find value.

As long as Chelsea’s exciting new-look midfield and the mega-talented Eden Hazard keep on supplying him, Torres will continue to net.

But as impressive as these individual performances and Chelsea’s dash to the top of the table has been, caution is needed at this time of the season as August promise frequently turns sour as the season runs it course.

Chelsea do seem much improved on the side that finished sixth last season, but it is too early to be certain they can match the Manchester clubs for firepower over 38 games.

With Van Persie netting 30 goals last season to Torres’s six, and the Dutchman now unquestionably the focal point of Man Utd’s attack after Wayne Rooney’s injury, his chances look distinctly better.

Robin van Persie has seen his odds of being crowned top goalscorer for the second season running cut from 8/1 to 6/1. Those looking at the longer picture will have been impressed by the crisp volley at home to Fulham on Saturday that signalled Van Persie’s arrival at Manchester United.

With Van Persie netting 30 goals last season to Torres’s six, and the Dutchman now unquestionably the focal point of Manchester United’s attack after Wayne Rooney’s injury, his chances look distinctly better.

Rooney has slipped from 8/1 to 10/1 after sustaining a thigh wound which will rule him out for four weeks. That said, with past form suggesting Manchester United should still outscore Chelsea this season (93 goals to 65 last season), backing the England striker is still a decent shout.

Injuries to team-mates have a habit of opening up opportunities for front men, and Carlos Tevez has moved up to13/2 third favourite as the sidelining of Sergio Aguero has allowed him to redeem lost favour at champions Manchester City.

Tevez’s two goals so far mark a decent start, but with a pack of star strikers sharing the scoring burden last season for City, it is difficult to see a single striker at the club getting the playing time to become outright top scorer.

Last season, Van Persie played 736 minutes more Premier League football than Aguero (City’s top goalscorer and 11/1 to be the league’s top scorer this season). Should Van Persie cement himself in Sir Alex Ferguson’s favour with more goals like Saturday’s, another top goalscoring crown can be his.

Recommended bet: RVP to be top scorer @ 6/1
