SPL Betting Preview – Matchday 4
Euan McTear is backing Dundee United to make it three wins out of three as he assesses the betting landscape ahead of another weekend of SPL action.
The SPL season is well underway and Saturday sees Kilmarnock host early leaders Dundee United, SPL newboys Dundee take on Ross County, Hibernian welcome winless St Johnstone and Celtic attempt to improve on a shaky start when visiting Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Then on Sunday, it’s Motherwell v St Mirren and Aberdeen v Hearts. Here’s the betting lowdown ahead of this weekend’s action.
Saturday, August 25th
Inverness v Celtic (12.45pm)

Key stat: Inverness failed to as much as score against Celtic last season as they lost to the champions four times.
Betting tip: A punt on another Celtic win to nil in the Highlands seems a good shout at 29/20, as does a bet on the Bhoys to win by exactly 2-0, a scoreline they enjoyed in three of their wins over Thistle in the last campaign. The latter option is available at 25/4.
Kilmarnock v Dundee United (3.00pm)
Home win: 5/2 Draw: 11/5 Away win: Evens
Key stat: Dundee United won their first two games of the SPL season, both by a 3-0 scoreline.
Betting tip: Against a Kilmarnock side looking for their first win of the season, the league leaders should be too strong. A bet on the visitors to win is therefore recommended at evens. For the more ambitions, odds of 16/1 on another 3-0 win for the Tangerines look tempting.
Dundee v Ross County (3.00pm)
Home win: 9/5 Draw: 2/1 Away win: 29/20
Key stat: Dundee have yet to score since promotion to the SPL.
Betting tip: With Ross County conceding just once since their promotion – a last-minute Celtic equaliser last week – they should have the upper hand in this battle of the SPL newboys. And it wouldn’t be a surprise if Dundee fail to score for the fourth week running, which is priced at 19/10.
Hibernian v St Johnstone (3.00pm)
Home win: 29/20 Draw: 21/10 Away win: 17/10
Key stat: All three meetings between these two last season had at least four goals.
Betting tip: A bet on another high-scoring game could be wise. And as it is well priced at 13/5, a punt on over 3.5 goals to be scored looks the best option.
Sunday August 26th
Aberdeen v Hearts (3.00pm)
Home win: 29/20 Draw: 21/10 Away win: 17/10
Key stat: Only two goals have been scored in Hearts’ last four visits to Pittodrie.
Betting tip: Unfortunately for the fans this could be another low-scoring affair. Odds of 13/20 on under 2.5 goals to be scored aren’t particularly generous, but it could help you make the most of a boring match.
Motherwell v St Mirren (3.00pm)
Home win: 17/20 Draw: 9/4 Away win: 3/1
Key stat: So far, Motherwell have drawn both of the matches they have played following a European game.
Betting tip: Motherwell could well be tired out after their Thursday night game with Levante. After both legs of their Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos, Motherwell drew their next SPL game. That makes the odds of 9/4 on a draw particularly tempting, especially with just one point separating the pair in the table.
