Back Elgin to put up a fight against Rangers
Rangers are odds on to win the game but top-of-the-table Elgin look good bets to join them on the scoresheet.
So far the Scottish Third Division has proven to be quite a steep learning curve for Ally McCoist and Rangers.
Two uninspiring away draws mean that they sit in fourth place in the fledgling league table and McCoist insists they have to buck up their ideas fairly sharpish if they want to avoid further embarrassments along the way.
But it’s not only Rangers who are learning as they go. This season is giving fans around the country the chance to find out a bit more about some of the teams from the remotest outposts of Scottish football.
On Sunday, it’s Elgin City’s turn to come under the national spotlight, so just what do we know about the team from Moray?

- Elgin are top of Division Three after three matches, winning two and drawing one so far.
- They made headlines in July after they were involved in an epic 7-5 defeat to Arbroath in the League Cup first round at Borough Briggs. You can get odds of 29/20 on there being five or more goals at Ibrox on Sunday.
- Veteran striker Dennis Wyness has a wealth of experience in the top flight with Aberdeen, Inverness CT, St Mirren and Hearts, and has hit three goals in five appearances for City this season. If you fancy him to score again on Sunday, odds of 3/4 are available on Elgin breaching the Rangers defence.
- SPL fans might also remember former Aberdeen player Ross O’Donoghue, who made a handful of appearances for the Dons at the turn of the century, and former Inverness CT defender Jamie Duff, who featured for the Caley Jags between 2008 and 2010. Both are now plying their trade at Borough Briggs.
- While Rangers were held by Berwick on Sunday, Elgin beat East Stirling 4-1 away from home last Saturday.
- Rangers and Scotland legend Andy Goram made five appearances for the Black and Whites during the 2003-04 season, while Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone also finished his career with the club.
So that’s some info on Ross Jack’s side, but what chance do they stand in Sunday’s showdown at Ibrox?
Rangers have started the season like Jekyll and Hyde, looking weak and vulnerable on their travels but utterly dominant at home.
This was underlined on Thursday when they thrashed First Division title favourites Falkirk 3-0 in the League Cup second round at Ibrox, less than a week after leaving Berwick with a scarcely deserved 1-1 draw.
At odds of 3/25 on a Rangers win, there isn’t much return to be made backing that outcome. Conversely, taking Elgin at 25/2 would yield huge returns if successful but it is an unlikely eventuality, as is the draw at 6/1.
The best way to make money out of this one might be backing both teams to score at 83/100.
Elgin have scored 12 goals in five matches in all competitions this season, while Rangers have conceded in every Division Three match they have played so far, meaning an away goal is certainly a possibility.
With Rangers likely to score as well, backing both teams to find the net looks appealing. New customers who register with bwin qualify for a free £20 bet and using that to back this outcome at 83/100 would return £36.60 if successful.
It might not be the biggest return you’ll ever make, but sometimes it pays to be cautious.
Recommended bet: Both teams to score in Rangers v Elgin @ 83/100
